After an unwelcome start with having to be up very early and on the move, the team focus during the warm up was not 100%, but the enthusiasm to get going and switch on thankfully comes on the whistle. There a funny lot…. Without trying to make too much of this match and its importance, the set up was as we have played recently with the aim to ‘tinker’ when and if needed. What I think is one of our best games, helped unlike last week, where changes had to be made to suit the style of game. Qtr 1 started again with real strength and control as our last few matches have, which is a great position to be in. A great run down the right into the corner by James, he floated over a fantastic cross for Michael to header with power and accuracy into the back of the net. I think this one of the best assist / goal combinations to date, for the simplicity and manner in which the opposition just had no ability to get involved with. Control of the quarter was advanced with another well taken goal when a loose ball in front of goal was snapped up by Guy, driven out to the left and he shot into the bottom left corner. Despite this lead, the back were having to be on their game with some scrambles in front of goal, that were cleared by Harry off the line and Jamie who throw his body into everything that come his way. A positive was the way the team set up and acted to a free kick, just outside the penalty area, after Jamie was deemed to have stepped outside his box to kick it. The wall stood up and Jamie redeemed in saving the shot. Qtr 3 brought another goal for Guy after a well worked move between GT moving the ball into a good position on the right, where he passed through to Jamie to hold, shield the ball and feed it out to the left to Guy, who took an unstoppable shot. A slight wobble came on what was a threat less attack but turned into something else, when George P pushed out to close down the attack and slipped, leaving the attacker free to gain some ground and direct a shot towards the right post. This shot was strong enough for it to hit Michael gloves, but just come off them and into the net. At the beginning of the game, I asked the boys to remain calm and work hard whatever happens and this they positively demonstrated with an instant reply to quash any opposition resurgence. Again Jamie acting as the holding striker halfway up the pitch after an opposition corner was played out, held the ball up against their 2 defensive players and passed the ball out to James who continued to run through the defence and fire into the top of the net. Momentum then grow for us, as the team then felt they could achieve more. This they did in the last quarter with 2 further goals. The first from Michael kicking out long and solidly to Wills, who controlled and fed out again to an active Guy on the left. Guy not wishing to miss out on a hat trick took full advantage. The last I think was a great example of how the whole team should and can act, with energy, clever thinking and moving the ball fast. A last effort attack on the left of our box, was meet by Harry who managed to slow the ball down, but ended up on the floor. His reaction to win the ball again was successful and he managed to move the danger away up to the right to Noah. Noah as he always does, used his speed and ability to look up the line, to pass onto GT, who had moved out of the centre to the gap behind. The ball close to going out, was brought under control by GT and he switched to attack the goal directly, bidding his time to cross to Wills. Despite the run by Wills, the ball went past the goalkeeper and in, with the luck of some uneven ground assisting. Reaching the finals, is a fantastic achievement for this team, when you consider where we started some years ago together. The original Vikings have grown in so many ways and the recent additions of new players like James and GT, have only strengthened and built a great team spirit. Having booked our big morning out, whatever happen now on the 30th April, will only be a bonus.
