Rotherfield
Stingers 1 - 11 Binfield
A 13th Sept 08
U14s League |
|
It was a long drive out to the
Bishopswood Sports Ground, but worth it as the ground was
excellent with a reasonably large pitch, with a heavy dew but fine
weather.
|
|
|
|
Once the match started, it didn't take
long for Binfield to release Sam on the right for a darting run,
finishing hard and low for 1-0 after 4 minutes. Good
passing work down the left wing allowed Ed a good run to the edge
of the area and then a perfect cross onto Jacob's head for
2-0.

Rotherfield
were a bit stunned and not helped by the loss of a defender with a
knee injury, adding to a number of existing injuries. They
reorganised well and tightened up their game making good use of
the offside line in what was then a frustrating time for
Binfield. More chances came and went for both teams without
further scoring until the last minutes of the game saw Rotherfield
determined attacking forcing a loose ball in the 6-yard area hit
home into the roof of the Binfield net for a well-deserved goal.

Half-time
1-2
|
|
|
|
The second half started much the same
as the first, with Sam released down the right and through 1-on1
with the keeper to finish hard and low again after 4 minutes and
then again after 6 minutes. This heralded the start of a
dominant period for Binfield with some great football creating
many chances. Lordy was through a number of times, hitting
both posts before a free kick, beautifully placed by a
quick-thinking Daniel, was headed home, (my pick of the goals on
the day). Charlie got a brace of goals with some great work
down the left. Jack scored a great poachers goal again.
Daniel scored with an excellent chip over the keeper into the far
corner and Sam got another 2 with his electric runs.

|
The whole team played their part in
the win, a good performance is always based on the firm foundation
of a strong defence and top drawer Goalkeeping, with good passing
and moving to keep good quality possession.

What really impressed me was the
determination of the team to keep the effort at maximum and the
will to win every ball right to the very end of the
game. One of the ways this showed itself that sticks in
my mind was a few times when Jacob was holding off Rotherfield
players much taller than him with great strength and determination
to keep the ball for the team.

Man of the Match
|
|
This week goes to Sam with a great
performance, sometimes a bit frustrating for him, but beat the
off-side trap fantastically in the second-half to prove how deadly
he is in front of goal.

|
|
|
Rotherfield worked hard, never gave up
and were a credit to their coach and parents. Their
sustained, disciplined efforts weren't helped by their injuries
and they seemed to tire a bit in the second-half as Binfield made
good use of the big pitch and 4 substitutes. I'm sure the
next match will be a lot closer to the half-time score if they can
field a full-strength team.

Things to improve on
|
|
We need to improve on the
communication pretty much right through the team, it's a really
simple but effective way to help your team-mates out, get into the
habit of letting them know they are being closed down with a
"Man on" shout or "Time" if they are not under
immediate pressure and have time look up, turn and to use the ball
more effectively.
|
|
|
|
Offside: defenders need to pull up the
defensive line a lot quicker and straighter. At the other end the
attackers need to" look down the line" and make sure
they are not straying offside, watch the line and delay the run
until the ball has been struck or step back onside a yard just as
the pass is about to be struck, then dart in.
