Binfield 2 – 0 Cavaliers  24th Nov 07 - League

The day dawned cold and frosty but soon began to thaw, a biting cold wind remaining for the match.  Binfield started in good spirits against the wind, pushing forward and defending well.  Cavaliers were determined in defence and not easy to break down, but the Binfield pressure told after about 17 minutes when a great follow up from Lewis rocketed into the back of the net for 1-0.  The tight midfield contest continued with several good efforts saved by the Cavaliers goalie, the play was a bit scrappy at times as Binfield set about grinding out a result.  A great penetrating run from Mark just before half-time, drew a rash challenge from a Cavaliers defender, leading to a free kick on the edge of the area – Mark territory.  Mark duly delivered a superb strike into the box, skilfully helped home by Daniel.  2-0 half-time.

The second half saw a more creative approach from Binfield and some more flowing play opening Cavaliers up for some terrific shots on target, all saved by the excellent Cavaliers ‘keeper.  A possibly harsh penalty was awarded against Cavaliers, and their goalie continued his fine form with another top class save to deny Mark.  Binfield stuck at their task in the Cavaliers half for most of second period, but couldn’t get another goal.  A Cavalier run late on forced Michael to stretch to make a save, but overall he had a quiet game as the rock solid Binfield defence held firm for a clean sheet.

Full-time 2-0.

Normally I whinge a bit about not taking chances, but this week I thought the team did a great job of building the attacks, and getting the end product – a shot on target.  Well done lads, a really solid performance, possibly the team didn’t play as well as they can all the time, but it’s the sign of champions that you can grind out a result when needed.

Credit goes to Cavaliers who worked really had and stuck at their game.  The match was played in great sporting spirit by both sides.  Thanks to Mitch for an excellent job as referee.

Man of the Match: Ben W earned the award this week with a tremendous display of skill on the ball, clever and creating passing and movement, as well as chasing and tracking back to help win the ball back.  Well done Ben, keep it up.
