U13's Fixtures Results Match Reports Cup

Match Report 22nd Sept 07

 Finchampstead A 2 – 3 Binfield FC

Finchampstead won their first two fixtures this season scoring an awesome table -topping 22 goals so we knew we were going to have an interesting 6-pointer game, but also knew we can compete with the best.

The game got underway with the expected Finch charge; waves of attacks crashing on the rocks of the Binfield defence, Matthew in goal had plenty of action to deal with, and deal with it he did!  Binfield were having trouble breaking out of their half.  Time for a change – on came Lordy and within a few minutes, with virtually his first touch he burst through the well-organised Finch defence and coolly finished chipping the keeper.  1-0 and Finch looked stunned, but were undeterred and continued with their positive attacking football, launching down the right wing, usually lead by their strong and skilful No. 8.  They were, however, a bit more careful about watching the counter-attack they now knew we were capable of.

With half time approaching Finch got a well-deserved and well-taken goal through a long-range effort into the top corner.  Half-time 1-1

The second-half saw more Finch pressure but also Binfield getting more of the game, the busy number 8 was finding our left-wing a lot less profitable with Lewis and Alex patrolling.  Sure enough the steadfast Binfield defending lead to a counter attack and Lordy in again to put us 2-1 up and Finch wondering just how well they would have to play to get something out of the game.

The chances became more even as the game went on and the Finch frustration began to show itself in a physical way, one poor challenge leading to a free kick in Mark range, he duly stepped up to fire in an excellent attempt which curved just outside the near post.  Finch’s self belief remained undaunted, to their credit, and as they attacked through the centre, a last ditch tackle gave them a central free kick on the edge of the area.  The No. 8 stepped up to curl a powerful shot into the corner giving Sibs no chance.  2-2.

With all to play for and not much time, both teams went after the winner; Binfield now creating more chances -  TC coming very close with a short range effort and Lordy through a few times.  The game seemed to be heading for a draw when Lordy got the ball wide on the right and made for goal, the angle and distance tight, he launched a cross/shot which sailed high and into the Finch net despite the best efforts of their goalie.  Hat-trick!  With 30 seconds left there was little Finch could do and the game ended a memorable victory for Binfield FC U13's.

Man of the Match: As I said on the day, picking an out-field player would have been extraordinarily difficult given the excellent all-round performances that were put in, but I think it was unanimous from our side, (and the opposition, from what some of them sportingly said), that Matthew should be honoured, he was simply amazing with save after save after double-save keeping the prolific Finch attack out.  Well-done Matthew.

Given the amount of times last season saw Binfield conceding late goals it was nice to have one ourselves, all the hard work, endeavour, commitment and skill were rewarded this time and the team got the result they deserved.  Everyone played their part and takes the credit.  Finchampstead will wonder how they didn’t win, as they have a great team and play well – that’s football!    Great Finch ref and friendly parents.

The only downside for me was the footballs in the car stunk of fox dung all the way home!
